Nepal: Madhesi Groups Accept the New Amendments: A Welcome Move - Update No. 341

After much dilly dallying and hesitation, the main Madhesi group SLMM- Samyukta Loktantric Madhesi Morcha agreed to accept the new amendments to the constitution which in their view addresses three of their concerns-namely citizenship, representation in the Upper house and on the working language in the provinces.

Prime Minister Oli finally condescended to make an official six days visit to India from 19th February.  Despite some advice from his close friends to visit China first and thus give a message to India, he chose to wait for the supposed “blockade” to be withdrawn before he could visit Delhi.  There is an impression current in the valley that he has done India a “favour.”

Nepal: Political Parties Not Sincere in Adhering to the Deadline: Update No. 304

There appears to be no seriousness on the part of te political leaders to expedite the constitution drafting process. 

Though the dead line of January 22nd was a self-imposed one, it was one date on which all the political parties had expressed their commitment at the time of the elections for the second interim constitution.
