Maldives and its Judiciary:

On 8th of April, the Maldives Bar Association renewed its call for the suspension of Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed pending investigations into allegations of the judge’s appearance in a series of sex tapes. The Bar contended that Hameed’s presence in the Supreme Court Bench contravenes the Islamic Shariah and the norms of justice. The result is that the Bar Council is itself being de recognised!

Maldives and the Future of the MDP:

A day after the election results to the Majlis were announced, former Nasheed declared that the MDP would need restructuring and a new leadership. The Chairman of the party Reeko Manik resigned from his post over the election debacle and Nasheed has been made ‘acting President’ for the time being.

Maldives: Majlis Elections: Ruling Coalition Gets a Comfortable Majority:

Preliminary results in the just concluded Parliamentary Elections (Majlis), showed that the government aligned candidates secured a comfortable majority with 46 seats and the MDP securing only 19 with other independents managing 4 seats so far.

The Supreme Court in Maldives has struck again and this time it is against the Election Commission who had displayed high professionalism in conducting the Presidential and later the local council elections against heavy odds.

I had mentioned many times before that the Judiciary in the Maldives is the weakest link in Maldives’ march to democracy.  This view is confirmed once again when the Supreme Court suo motu issued notices to the Election Commission members last week for contempt of court and disobedience of orders on an event that occurred four months ago!

Elections to the Local councils took place on Jan 18 and the results announced indicate that there has been no significant shift in the loyalties of the people from that of the Presidential elections.

Maldives: President Yameen: Problems being faced in settling down

In settling down, it was expected that President Yameen would face many challenges.  For him the first and foremost would be to get along with other coalition partners, particularly with the Jumhooree party but for whose support he would not be in the Presidential chair.
