Disturbing news continue to come from Nepal. The Ruling Parties are taking their own time to file the constitutional amendments. The Madhesi groups having rejected the amendments are also prolonging their agitation.

Political turbulence has again started in Maldives - a situation reminiscent of 2012 when former president Nasheed was coerced to resign from his post.
The opposition parties mainly the MDP and the Jumhooree have joined together to start a movement called “save the constitution” and Male is witnessing night marches and protests for the last few days again reminiscent of the 2012 days.

It is generally agreed that the main task of the present Koirala government should be to get on with constitution making within one year. This urgency has been reflected in almost all the manifestos of the parties during the November elections and continued to be mouthed now and then. But the ground realities appear to be different!

It does not need a rocket scientist to assess that a working and a sincere alliance between the two major parties- the Nepali Congress and the UML is a must for the promulgation of a new constitution and for ensuring suitable atmosphere for constitution writing. The primary task of the government is to get the new draft ready and get it promulgated withing one year as was promised.

After failing to work out a consensus among the parties, the two major parties- the Nepali Congress and the UML with a few fringe parties, elected the veteran Nepali Congress Parliamentary leader Sushil Koirala as the 37th Prime Minister with 405 votes for and 148 members against in the election conducted on the 10th of February.
