Nepal: Federalism Only in Name?

This month two issues among many dominated the political discourse in Nepal.  The first one was the abrupt postponement of Inter State Council Meeting of the Chief Ministers that was being eagerly awaited by the Provincial Leaders.  Second was an equally abrupt withdrawal of Nepal from the first ever military exercise of BIMSTEC countries initiated by India  way back in June.

Prime Minister Oli’s five day visit to China from 19th June is said to have been a very successful one.  Oli stayed in Beijing for three days after which he flew to Lhasa for another two days before returning to Kathmandu.

Nepal: Upendra Yadav Joins Government on Assurances:

On June 1st, Upendra Yadav of SSFN- ( Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal) joined Oli’s government as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population.  Another member of his party Mohammed Istiyaq Raya has also been inducted as Minister for Urban Development.

Nepal: The New Communist Party of Nepal: Update No 365

On 17th of May, the Chiefs of UML and Maoists Centre, Nepal announced the merger of their two parties and the formation of a new party- called Communist Party of Nepal. The day also marked the 25th anniversary of late Madan Bhandari of UML who died in a car accident though many still believe that he died under suspicious circumstances.
